Unfortunately These Summer Storms was not a hit for our group. The writing felt clunky and the characters fell flat. The premise is intriguing and I love the “rich people behaving badly” trope, but the execution just wasn’t there. Currently reading too many books lol

I’m reading These Summer Storms for book club (it was my turn to pick the book this month and sadly I am not loving the book so far 😬) AND Project Hail Mary (attempting to finish before seeing the movie on Friday) AND Throne of Glass.

I’ve been reading a lot this week, but I’ve been in a major reading slump for close to a month now. It’s super disappointing because the first few books I read this year were so amazing. Fingers crossed it’ll pick back up soon 🤞🏻

Told through alternating POVs, The Encore follows Lottie, Anna, and Will during transformative periods in their lives. All three are wildly talented musicians on wildly different paths. Although their lives are different, they are connected in ways they could have never imagined, and the discovery of these connections leads them on quite the journey. They embark on a cross-country tour and are forced to reconcile with their past choices.

What I loved:
• The NYC setting
• The fashion designer uncle/father figure
• I learned a LOT about music (as someone who knows next to nothing about music this was very cool to learn about)
• I appreciated how delicately the author handled heavy topics

What I didn’t love:
• I was not a huge fan of the big choice Anna made (this choice basically drove the plot of the whole book). I wished it had played out differently, and I had a hard time accepting why she did it. But after more was revealed about her past, I came to understand and respect her decision

Thank you so much for the ARC, @unionsqandco!

I’m reading Project Hail Mary (I actually started it a few months ago and paused for some reason?!) and Wuthering Heights on my kindle. I know the movie isn’t exactly like the book, but I still want to read it before going to see the new movie on 3/1 ❤️‍🔥

Book Review: Stone Cold Fox

Synopsis (taken from Goodreads):

A compelling debut novel about an ambitious woman who, after a lifetime of conning alongside her mother, wants to leave her dark past behind and marry the heir to one of the country’s wealthiest families.

Like any enterprising woman, Bea knows what she’s worth and is determined to get all she deserves—it just so happens that what she deserves is to marry rich. After a lifetime of forced instruction in the art of swindling men by her mother, Bea wants nothing more than to escape her shadow, close the door on their sordid past, and disappear safely into old-money domesticity.

When Bea finds her final mark in the perfectly dull blue-blooded Collin, she’s ready to deploy all her tricks one last time. The challenge isn’t getting the ring, but rather the approval of Collin’s family and everyone else in their tax bracket, particularly his childhood best friend Gale. Going toe-to-toe with Gale isn’t a threat to an expert like Bea, but what begins as an amusing cat-and-mouse game quickly develops into a dangerous chase. As the truth of Bea’s past threatens to come roaring out, she finds herself racing against the clock to pass the finish line before everything is exposed.

Stone Cold fox: 4/4 stars

I’ve seen so many glowing reviews about STONE COLD FOX and I’m happy to say that it lived up to the hype for me!

This is a story about Bea Case and her mother (unnamed, likely because Bea herself doesn’t even know her own mother’s true name). Her mother is a con artist and all-around awful mother. Her target is rich men, so Bea grows up bouncing from home to home. She spent so many years around her mother’s devious and murderous ways that her biggest goal in life is to be nothing like her. When Bea sets her sights on the powerful, wealthy-beyond-belief, Case family, she knows Collin Case is her end game.
She’ll stop at nothing to win over his family so she can secure a lifetime
of happiness and richness.

It’s a fast-paced and heavily character-driven read. I found myself conflicted about the main character; if you’ve read the book, you know she’s obviously a horrible person, but sometimes I caught a flicker of change or positive character development out of her.

This reads like a movie. I seriously HOPE we get an adaptation! 👀

The Encore: The strong bond between two college friends and musicians is made more complicated when a long withheld secret is exposed, forcing them together on an unexpected journey. Releases in March!

Wuthering Heights: I know the new movie isn’t going to be an exact adaptation, but I still really want to read it before seeing the movie release later this month!

We Love You, Bunny: The sequel to the beloved Bunny. I’m really looking forward to reading this one!

The Cliffs: J. Courtney Sullivan is one of my favorite authors who mainly writes literary fiction, so when I heard she had a newer release I somehow missed, I knew I had to check it out!
