If you’re in the mood for a psychological thriller/futuristic sci-fi that’ll leave you questioning everything, Foe is the perfect pick 🛸👽

It’s one of those stories that starts off quietly but hides a growing sense of dread beneath the surface. And fun fact - Iain Reid is also the author of I’m Thinking of Ending Things, which was made into a pretty popular movie on Netflix a few years ago!

The story centers around Junior and Hen, a married couple living a quiet, rural life. One day, a mysterious man named Terrance shows up and announces that Junior has been selected for a top-secret project—one that will take him far from home, while Hen stays behind… but she won’t be alone. If you can, I’d recommend reading the physical book over the audio version, as the author incorporates visual elements that subtly hint at the ambiguous ending.

Reid has a talent for creating an atmosphere of unease where every sentence feels like a clue. The isolation, the tension between the characters, and the slow unraveling of the mystery make this a really unsettling read. It’s not an action-packed thriller; it’s more about mood and what’s left unsaid.

If you enjoyed The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, you’ll probably enjoy Foe as well.

Reading update ✨

Finally wrapped up with work for the week and looking forward to having the whole week off next week. The past 1-2 weeks I’ve been I reading like crazy and read The Summer Pact, Pink Glass Houses, After I do, and my re-read of Adelaide (aka my favorite book of all time)

I will have a lot of time to read this week so I’m hoping to get 3-4 more reads in before 2025 🤩

While reading is definitely not a competition, there is something exciting about hitting a goal you set for yourself! If you’re close to reaching your 2024 reading goal but need to squeeze in a few more books, here are 20 recommendations. These titles range from 100-something pages to 300-something pages, but all are less than 400. I’ve personally read all of these and selected them based on the length and how long it took me to read (I’m not a super fast reader normally). For example, Cover Story is 368 pages but due to the format (a lot of emails, text messages, news articles etc. within the book), I was able to read it in a few hours.

The God of the Woods has it ALL: a murder mystery, a missing person, romance, family drama, and even workplace drama. I haven’t encountered another mystery with characters as complex as this one and I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much. It’s on the longer side compared to other mysteries (coming in at just under 500 pages), but don’t let the length scare you! This is a well-written story with an even more well-developed plot. I’d call it a must-read for anyone who loves a layered, high-stakes story! 🔍🏕️

Bonus - it just won 2024 Goodreads Readers’ Favorite Mystery & Thriller a few days ago. And it only came out in July! (!!!)

It’s the last month of 2024! This year has felt especially long to me (in a good way!) so I can’t really say “I can’t believe it’s already December.”

To end the year on a high note, here are 30 new releases hitting the shelves this month. December 3rd was one of the bigger pub days (I’m 3 days behind posting this on 12/6 oops) with 19/30 titles in this guide being released on that date.

I’m most excited for The Close Up and Sister Snake, but Sweet Vidalia and Custodians of Wonder are also calling my name!

When I read Cleopatra and Frankenstein in April and LOVED it, I knew I’d read anything else Coco Mellors wrote. Fast forward to the release of Blue Sisters in May of this year - I’ve been so happy to see this on so many other accounts and that Mellors is getting the attention she deserves as an author. As a huge fan of literary fiction (think: The Great Believers, Once There Were Wolves), I can’t think of many things more exciting than finding well-written literary fiction. It’s a hard genre to write because it toes the line of being boring and purposely choosing subtlety over action. If you’re looking for family dynamics/drama, a character-driven novel, and stunning writing, then Blue Sisters will not disappoint 💙✨

The train from Venice to Munich was one of my favorite parts of my recent trip to Europe. We picked the day time train and the longer route to go through the Brenner Pass. 10/10 🚞
