Synopsis (taken from Goodreads):
After serving five years in prison for a tragic mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to the town where it all went wrong, hoping to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. But the bridges Kenna burned are proving impossible to rebuild. Everyone in her daughter’s life is determined to shut Kenna out, no matter how hard she works to prove herself. The only person who hasn’t closed the door on her completely is Ledger Ward, a local bar owner and one of the few remaining links to Kenna’s daughter. But if anyone were to discover how Ledger is slowly becoming an important part of Kenna’s life, both would risk losing the trust of everyone important to them. The two form a connection despite the pressure surrounding them, but as their romance grows, so does the risk. Kenna must find a way to absolve the mistakes of her past in order to build a future out of hope and healing.
Reminders of Him: 3.5/5
This book…..talk about an emotional read. I really don’t like the events that took place in this book, but I love the overall message so I’m going to focus my review on that.
This novel is written, like a few other Colleen Hoover novels, in alternating points of view between the 2 love interests – which I’ve decided is my favorite romance format!
Although this book has 2 main characters like any romance novel would, I feel it has 3: Kenna, Ledger, and Scotty. After all, Scotty is the whole reason Kenna and Ledger ever cross paths and ultimately fall in love, even though we never officially meet him (beyond a flashback in a letter).
Colleen Hoover certainly delivers on the romance, but mostly on the ‘life lessons.’
What I took from this book: forgiveness and love outweigh any preconceived notions you have of someone, and you should always be open to giving people a chance/listen to their version of the story.
What prevented this from being a 5 star read for me is that I didn’t feel good after reading it. Normally after finishing a romance I feel happy and optimistic. The whole plot is just so tragic and I also didn’t like that an issue as serious & devastating as drunk driving was brushed over so quickly. Emotions ran very high for me while reading this.
