In 2020, I was reading a ton during the COVID shutdown. I started my Bookstagram account in July 2020, right in the middle of the chaos, in an attempt to avoid dying of boredom. Bookstagram has become my favorite corner of the internet, my creative outlet, and a passion project of mine.

A few things about me:
*  I’m 27 and I live in Greenville, SC!
* I’m currently planning my wedding to my wonderful fiancé (November 2026) <3
* My entire life, I’ve loved to read. My dad is an English professor and I grew up literally surrounded by books
* I work as a media buyer at an advertising agency and I love my job!
* I love clothes, shoes, accessories, and home decor, especially colorful options
* My favorite genre is literary fiction, but I also enjoy thrillers!

Personally, it’s one of my favorite genres/tropes (tied with campus novels, which I’ll also be dedicating an entire post to). Full of drama and strong character development, these books offer a glimpse into a world I’ve never been part of. The richer and more badly behaved, the better.

In my post, I asked for more recommendations from this genre, and the responses did NOT disappoint. I rounded up all the responses and threw in some of my personal recommendations, and curated a list of 23 books that I think fit this trope perfectly.

Unfortunately These Summer Storms was not a hit for our group. The writing felt clunky and the characters fell flat. The premise is intriguing and I love the “rich people behaving badly” trope, but the execution just wasn’t there. BUT…even when we all dislike the book (aka this month’s book), the convo is always flowing, and the other girls bring such funny and insightful thoughts!

Currently reading too many books lol

I’m reading These Summer Storms for book club (it was my turn to pick the book this month and sadly I am not loving the book so far 😬) AND Project Hail Mary (attempting to finish before seeing the movie on Friday) AND Throne of Glass.

I’ve been reading a lot this week, but I’ve been in a major reading slump for close to a month now. It’s super disappointing because the first few books I read this year were so amazing. Fingers crossed it’ll pick back up soon 🤞🏻

Book Review: In My Dreams I Hold a Knife

Synopsis (taken from Goodreads):

Six friends.
One college reunion.
One unsolved murder.

A college reunion turns dark and deadly in this chilling and propulsive suspense novel about six friends, one unsolved murder, and the dark secrets they’ve been hiding from each other—and themselves—for a decade.

Ten years after graduation, Jessica Miller has planned her triumphant return to southern, elite Duquette University, down to the envious whispers that are sure to follow in her wake. Everyone is going to see the girl she wants them to see—confident, beautiful, indifferent—not the girl she was when she left campus, back when Heather’s murder fractured everything, including the tight bond linking the six friends she’d been closest to since freshman year. Ten years ago, everything fell apart, including the dreams she worked for her whole life—and her relationship with the one person she wasn’t supposed to love.

But not everyone is ready to move on. Not everyone left Duquette ten years ago, and not everyone can let Heather’s murder go unsolved. Someone is determined to trap the real killer, to make the guilty pay. When the six friends are reunited, they will be forced to confront what happened that night—and the years’ worth of secrets each of them would do anything to keep hidden.

In My Dreams I Hold a Knife: 5/5 stars

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Pages: 345

Published: 2021

Can every thriller I read be like this one?!

Books set on college campuses always grab my attention. I loved everything about my college experience and reading about it makes me feel nostalgic! This was such a great read and did not disappoint for my first thriller of 2023.

In My Dreams I Hold a Knife explores the dynamics of  a group of 7 friends as they navigate college. Each friend has a unique background and story. We learn the most about Jessica, our main character, who is self-centered and twisted in her own ways. Secrets, murder, and more add to the complex plot and will have you guessing until (literally) the last page. My ONLY negative about this one is that there are 7 characters, so it got confusing at times keeping up with everyone…but once I got the hang of who is who, it was a lot easier to follow!

This is a wonderful debut novel and I will 100% be reading more from Ashley Winstead.

I held off on reading this book for so long and I WISH I had read it sooner.

Read if you liked:

  • Tell Me Lies
  • The Girls Are All So Nice Here

Told through alternating POVs, The Encore follows Lottie, Anna, and Will during transformative periods in their lives. All three are wildly talented musicians on wildly different paths. Although their lives are different, they are connected in ways they could have never imagined, and the discovery of these connections leads them on quite the journey. They embark on a cross-country tour and are forced to reconcile with their past choices.

What I loved:
• The NYC setting
• The fashion designer uncle/father figure
• I learned a LOT about music (as someone who knows next to nothing about music this was very cool to learn about)
• I appreciated how delicately the author handled heavy topics

What I didn’t love:
• I was not a huge fan of the big choice Anna made (this choice basically drove the plot of the whole book). I wished it had played out differently, and I had a hard time accepting why she did it. But after more was revealed about her past, I came to understand and respect her decision

Thank you so much for the ARC, @unionsqandco!
